This Giving Tuesday, December 3, the PGA TOUR is encouraging fans, community partners and individuals to consider giving back to our military through Birdies for the Brave – a collaborative effort by the PGA TOUR, Inc., PGA TOUR Charities, Inc., and the TPC Network which is dedicated to honoring and showing appreciation to the courageous men and women of our U.S. Armed Forces and their families.
Created in 2012 to encourage people to do good, Giving Tuesday unleashes the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world on the designated Tuesday and every day. Over the past seven years, Giving Tuesday has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity; and no one deserves generosity more than those who proudly serve our country.
A centerpiece of the PGA TOUR’s steadfast charitable mission aimed at positively impacting the lives of those who live and work in PGA TOUR tournament communities nationwide, Birdies for the Brave serves military homefront groups from all five branches of the military – including active duty and Reserve military member, non-retired veterans, military retirees, wounded heroes, and military families. Birdies for the Brave is supported by more than 30 Official PGA TOUR Player Supporters and countless other PGA TOUR players who actively support the program on-site at tournaments and in the community.
Named among the top 20 charities in the U.S. that support military families and awarded the USO’s prestigious Legacy of Hope Award, Birdies for the Brave was originally created in 2004 by PGA TOUR player Phil Mickelson and his wife, Amy, along with Glenn Cohen, to support combat-wounded veterans. In 2005, the PGA TOUR adopted the program, and expanded it to include a wide variety of military outreach efforts during more than 120 tournaments on the PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR Champions and Korn Ferry Tour. Just some of these programs include complimentary admission and hospitality for military members and their families during most PGA TOUR events; Military Appreciation Day celebrations; integration opportunities for wounded heroes; group baby showers for military moms-to-be whose spouses are deployed or who are active duty themselves; the donation of 100% mortgage-free homes to wounded heroes; the donation of service dogs to veterans suffering from PTSD, TBI, physical disabilities and military sexual trauma; and more.
Birdies for the Brave also includes a series of fundraising events conducted at the PGA TOUR’s TPCs and partner clubs nationwide, an effort that has raised more than $19 million for 10 military homefront groups endorsed by the U.S. Department of Defense, which provide critical programs and services to meet the specialized needs of wounded warriors and military families. 100% of the net proceeds directly benefit these military homefront charities. In 2019, fundraising events were conducted at TPC Sawgrass; TPC Sugarloaf; TPC River Highlands; TPC Deere Run; TPC Jasna Polana; TPC River’s Bend; Meadowbrook Farms; Port Royal Golf Club; Hampton Hall Golf Club; and TPC Prestancia.
