In the military, families serve too.  To show military moms and moms-to-be in Phoenix and Las Vegas how much their service and sacrifice are appreciated, the non-profit Operation Shower teamed up with Birdies for the Brave to host elaborately-designed, joyful baby showers during the Charles Schwab Cup Championship and the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.  This was the first time that both tournaments had hosted an Operation Shower event.

On September 23, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship collaborated with Discover Financial Services to host a “Cute As A Button”-themed baby shower for 30 military moms-to-be whose spouses are deployed members of Luke Air Force Base, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base or the Arizona National Guard, or in some cases, who are active duty themselves.  Sponsored by Discover with support from General Dynamics, the shower included lunch, raffle prizes, games, guest speakers, and the highlight of the event, the distribution of Operation Shower’s signature Showers In A Box – gifts for the babies and moms that were donated by companies including Chicco’s and Playtex Baby.  From onesies and baby bottles to clothing, crib bedding, diaper bags and toys, the gifts will go a long way for these moms-to-be, many of whom would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience a baby shower.  While the tangible items were greatly appreciated, the most treasured gift may have been the chance for these moms to share camaraderie with other expectant military moms, according to Operation Shower Founder and Chief Shower Officer LeAnn Morrissey.

“For military moms who are expecting a baby and whose spouses are deployed, and especially for military moms who are active duty, the impending arrival of a child can be both exciting and stressful,” said Morrissey.  “For everything they do at home or on the front lines, these moms deserve our thanks, our support, and an opportunity to celebrate together.”

Tracy Hedrick, vice president, Discover Phoenix Operations Center, echoed those sentiments, saying, “Discover is thrilled to join with Operation Shower, Birdies for the Brave and the Charles Schwab Cup Championship to show our appreciation to these courageous moms-to-be.  Volunteering and Doing The Right Thing are two of the values that help shape Discover’s culture and guide the company’s actions.  Hosting Operation Shower with support from General Dynamics provides us with the opportunity to support local military families and help honor their service to our country.”

On September 28, Milan Homes, Operation Shower and KLAS 8NewsNow Good Day Las Vegas Meteorologist Sherry Swensk helped to bring joy to 30 local military moms-to-be when they hosted a group baby shower in their honor.  All of the expectant moms were either active duty service members or the spouses of deployed members of Nellis Air Force Base, Creech Air Force Base, the Nevada Army National Guard, or other area bases. The first Operation Shower event to be hosted in Las Vegas, the event was held at TPC Summerlin in conjunction with the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open (Sept. 30 – Oct. 6) – part of the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup.

Presented by Milan Homes in partnership with Ten23 Designs, the “Desert Dreams”-themed event included lunch, raffle prizes, and the distribution of Operation Shower’s Showers In A Box, with gifts donated by Chicco, Skip Hop, and other companies.  Support for the shower was also provided by the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open and TPC Summerlin.

“We are thrilled to join with Operation Shower to express our sincere gratitude to these courageous military moms-to-be for their service on behalf of our country,” said Milan Homes Owner Dominic Coloutes.  “Whether they are active duty themselves or the person keeping everything running smoothly at home so their loved one can proudly serve overseas, we know the enormous sacrifices these women make and feel privileged for the opportunity to show them some love and support through this special shower.”
