The 2019 TOUR Championship continued its long-standing tradition of supporting U.S. military members and their families by hosting a variety of outreach and appreciation activities during the event in August at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club. Highlighting its Birdies for the Brave activities, the TOUR Championship joined with Humana in hosting a special ceremony on Friday of tournament week in the Birdies for the Brave Patriots’ Outpost presented by United Rentals, during which the deed to a mortgage-free home was presented to 12-year U.S. Army veteran Terry Bass by the non-profit Military Warriors Support Foundation (MWSF).
Bass, a native of Gainesville, FL, enlisted in the Army in 2000, and served three tours of duty in Iraq. Most recently, he served as a combat medic assigned to William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, TX, where he cared for soldiers sent stateside from Germany with significant combat injuries. Like many of those he assisted, Bass returned home with multiple injuries including PTSD. He credits his wife, Stephanie, as the “glue that keeps everything together,” especially during deployments while caring for their three young children – all of whom were born with health issues.
Neil Mullaney, vice president and chief operating officer of Humana Military, expressed his gratitude for Bass’ service, telling him during the ceremony, “We are indebted for what you and other military members and their families do in service to our country, and are honored to join with the TOUR Championship and Military Warriors Support Foundation in wishing you and your family health and happiness in your new home. It’s the very least we can do to recognize your courage and sacrifice on behalf of all Americans.”
Military Warriors Support Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity founded by Lt. General Leroy Sisco (Ret) in 2007, which is dedicated to providing support and programs that facilitate a smooth and successful transition for our nation’s combat wounded heroes and Gold Star families. MWSF programs focus on housing and home ownership, employment, recreational activities and transportation assistance. Through Homes4WoundedHeroes, MWSF awards 100% mortgage-free homes to combat-wounded veterans and Gold Star spouses of heroes who have fallen in combat. In addition to the home, each family receives three years of family and financial mentoring so that they may learn the skills necessary to become happy and successful homeowners. This program not only changes the families, but it also changes the lives of the generations that follow.
