TPC Sawgrass continued its long-standing tradition of supporting our military by hosting the TPC Sawgrass Birdies for the Brave Event Presented by Milan Homes September 8 and 9. Sponsored by Milan Homes with support from Patriot Sponsors Nelson/Wakefield Beasley & Associates, Glenmorangie and Swisher International, the fundraiser followed Birdies for the Brave’s annual military homefront charity meetings. The two-day event began with a welcome reception on Sunday evening in the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse, featuring a silent auction, a cocktail reception, dinner, and live entertainment by U.S. Navy veteran and touring musician Dave Bray USA – who served as a Navy Corpsman for the Second Battalion/2nd Marines stationed out of Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, and whose musical career is dedicated to supporting active duty military members, veterans and first responders.
During the evening, remarks were provided by special guests including Homes for Our Troops President and CEO Brigadier General (Retired) Tom Landwermeyer, who introduced wounded hero Jarrod Addison, who will soon be receiving a mortgage-free home in Jacksonville.
A highlight of the evening was an address by U.S. Army veteran and NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point who served as an attack helicopter platoon leader during Desert Storm. He joined the NASA team at the Johnson Space Center in 2000, and was selected as an astronaut candidate in 2004. In 2008, Kimbrough completed his first spaceflight, logging a total of 15 days, 20 hours and 29 minutes and 37 seconds on Space Shuttle Endeavor, including 12 hours and 32 minutes in two spacewalks. The recipient of numerous military awards and commendations, Kimbrough is currently part of the Expedition 49/50 Mission.
Also highlighting the evening was the announcement of Birdies for the Brave’s 2019 Courage Award, which was presented to K9s For Warriors Founder Shari Duval. Click here to read more about Duval and her innumerable contributions to veterans, her community and the country.
A charity golf event followed on Monday morning on the award-winning THE PLAYERS Stadium Course, including a variety of military-themed contests and static displays, with wounded heroes, PGA TOUR players or local celebrities playing in each foursome. The golf outing was kicked off by a military opening ceremony featuring a demonstration by the U.S. Army Special Forces Jump Team; the presentation of the colors by the U.S. Marine Corps Color Guard; the singing of the national anthem by 15 year-old singer/songwriter Katryna Alexis; and guest speakers including Kimbrough, set against the backdrop of an HH-60M Blackhawk Medevac helicopter which was flown to the course from the Florida Army National Guard’s C Company, 1st Battalion, 111th General Aviation Support Battalion at Cecil Field.
As in the past, 100% of the net proceeds raised at TPC Sawgrass and other fundraising events conducted at courses and clubs nationwide will be donated to 10 military homefront charities that are part of Birdies for the Brave, which provide critical programs and services to meet the specialized needs of wounded veterans and military families.
