May has been designated as Military Appreciation Month to honor the service and sacrifice of members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines and National Guard, as well as the innumerable contributions of military spouses and families. Congress designated the month of May as Military Appreciation Month, as it includes many military anniversaries and events including Loyalty Day (May 1), Victory in Europe Day (May 8), Military Spouse Appreciation Day (May 10), Children of Fallen Patriots Day (May 13), Armed Forces Day (May 18) and Memorial Day (May 27.)
In honor of those who are currently serving or have served and their families, as well as those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to keep America safe and free, Birdies for the Brave as well as PGA TOUR tournaments across the U.S. have been hosting special activities, ceremonies and events as part of Military Appreciation Month. Among the activities, for the third year in a row, more than 80 Hardee’s restaurants in Florida, Georgia and Alabama have raised funds in store for Birdies for the Brave as part of its Stars for Heroes campaign. Near the conclusion of the campaign, PGA TOUR employees joined with K9s For Warriors heroes and their canine companions at a lunch celebration at Hardee’s restaurant in Jacksonville, Fla. on National Burger Day.
During the AT&T Byron Nelson, the tournament was privileged to play host to the Bush Institute Warrior Open presented by AT&T, an event designed to highlight the resilience and continued leadership of our nation’s wounded heroes and their families. The event began in 2011 for U.S. military personnel seriously wounded or injured since September 11, 2001. Since then, more than 150 warriors have participated in the Military Service Initiative’s Team 43 Sports, which include the Warrior Open and the W100K bike ride.
Military appreciation activities continued during the Charles Schwab Challenge, where two local combat-wounded heroes were fit with a full set of custom Callaway golf clubs as part of the Callaway Warrior Club Fitting program on Wednesday. The tournament also featured Lockheed Martin Care Package Day that afternoon, where 600 care packages were assembled and shipped from Colonial Country Club to military bases in the Middle East. Other military activations during the Charles Schwab Challenge included complimentary tickets for military members and their families; hospitality in the Patriots’ Outpost; a home donation ceremony where two military families were presented with mortgage-free homes; and a moment of silence during play for those who have lost their lives serving in the Armed Forces on Sunday in honor of Memorial Day.
Closing out Military Appreciation Month, The Memorial will conduct a variety of military engagement and appreciation activities including complimentary ticketing; Callaway Warrior Club Fitting Program; Military and Veteran Appreciation Day; and a Military Caddie Program, offering active duty military members the opportunity to caddie for PGA TOUR players on the 16th hole during the Pro-Am, followed by a Salute to Service brunch.
Birdies for the Brave would like to extend its heartfelt appreciation to the PGA TOUR players, fans, donors and sponsors who support military outreach and appreciation activities during Military Appreciation Month and throughout the year.
