TPC Sawgrass continued its long-standing tradition of supporting our military by hosting the club’s annual Birdies for the Brave fundraising event December 9 and 10.  Festivities began with a welcome reception on Sunday evening in TPC Sawgrass’ magnificent clubhouse, featuring live entertainment, a silent auction, a cocktail reception, a delicious dinner, and remarks by special guests including retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Richard Dix.

A charity golf event followed on Monday morning on the award-winning THE PLAYERS Stadium Course, including a variety of military-themed contests, the opportunity for wounded heroes to play in each foursome, World War II antique static displays, and tactical vehicles from the U.S. Marine Corps.  The golf outing was kicked off by a military opening ceremony featuring the presentation of the colors by the U.S. Marine Corps Color Guard, the singing of the national anthem by 16-year-old Caleigh Furyk – daughter of PGA TOUR player Jim Furyk, and guest speakers including Jim Furyk and Brigadier General Dix.  The ceremony took place against a military-themed backdrop that included a CH47-Chinook helicopter flown to TPC Sawgrass by the Florida Army National Guard from Cecil Field.

Both the morning ceremony and the evening gala highlighted the vital role that each of the 11 homefront groups plays in supporting military  members and their families.  “We must remember that the war is not over,” Brigadier General Dix stated, “and it’s groups like these that know that and continue to do an amazing job of taking care of our men, women and families in the United States Armed Forces.”
