Kent State University, Lockheed Martin help honor military during WGC-Bridgestone Invitational


AKRON, Ohio – Kent State University showed its appreciation to military members and their families by hosting a military-exclusive hospitality chalet during the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational at the historic Firestone Country Club August 5-9 – where members of the military and their families were treated to complimentary admission thanks to supporting sponsorship by Quicken Loans.

Open from Thursday through Sunday of tournament week, the Birdies for the Brave Patriots’ Outpost Presented by Kent State University offered military guests complimentary food and beverages and a relaxing venue for viewing all of the tournament action. On Saturday the tournament hosted a military appreciation ceremony that included a the singing of the national anthem, a variety of special presentations, and an address by senior military leaders including Chief Master Sergeant Mitchell Brush, Senior Enlisted Advisor for the National Guard Bureau.

During the ceremony, 60 new military members were sworn in by officers from the United States Air Force and Army. In addition, Tempur-Pedic recognized two local Northeast Ohio families as part of its Beyond Veterans Day campaign: The Haworth family of Cleveland and the Davis family of Youngstown, each of whom received complimentary tickets and hospitality to the tournament as well as a new Tempur-Pedic bed set. Bill and Loretta Davis, both of whom are members of the military, were on hand to be recognized and enjoy the day’s festivities.

“We feel privileged for the opportunity to partner with the World Golf Championships – Bridgestone Invitational and Birdies for the Brave to express our sincere gratitude to those who put their lives on the line every day to keep America safe and free,” said Kent State University President Beverly Warren, who spoke during the ceremony. “We hope military members, veterans and their families enjoyed this wonderful opportunity to share camaraderie while watching some of the greatest players in the world compete at Firestone Country Club.”
