Barclays announces “Barclays Birdies for the Brave” military fundraising initiative during The Barclays Military Appreciation Day

Barclays to donate $1,000 to Birdies for the Brave for every birdie made on No. 15

Paramus, N.J. (August 20, 2014) – Tom King, Chief Executive of Barclays’ Investment Bank, joined PGA TOUR player and World Golf Hall of Fame member Phil Mickelson, senior military leaders and local dignitaries in honoring our nation’s military during a Military Appreciation Day ceremony behind the clubhouse at The Ridgewood Country Club on Tuesday. The event was part of The Barclays tournament, the first of four FedExCup Playoffs events that will determine the PGA TOUR’s season-long champion: the FedExCup Champion.

During the ceremony, Mr. King announced a special fundraising initiative – Barclays Birdies for the Brave – in which Barclays will donate $1,000 for every birdie made on the par-3 15th hole during the four competition rounds of The Barclays, benefiting Birdies for the Brave®. Birdies for the Brave is a national military outreach and appreciation initiative proudly supported by the TOUR, which was created in 2006 by Mickelson. In 2012, the White House named Birdies for the Brave among the top 20 charities that support military families.

The last time The Barclays was played at Ridgewood, PGA TOUR players made a total of 98 birdies over the course of the tournament.

“Barclays and The Barclays tournament have a long history of supporting U.S. military members and their families. We look forward to reinforcing the outstanding legacy created by Phil through this fundraising initiative benefiting Birdies for the Brave and the nine military home front charities it supports,” said Mr. King.

“I’m very proud of what Birdies for the Brave has accomplished since 2006, but I feel like we are just getting started,” said Mickelson. “My father served in the military. For me, personally, the best way for me to be involved is to bring people together, and to make sure that men and women when they come home from service, they know how loved they are and how appreciated they are, and we also want to try to make sure that their quality of life is as good as it can be.

“I’m proud to be associated with a company like Barclays that steps up to help these men and women for their sacrifice.”

The Military Appreciation Ceremony included military pageantry, featuring the presentation of the colors by the Marine Corps color guard, and the singing of the National Anthem by recording artist Cali Rodi. Other special guests at the ceremony included Marine Sergeant Major Bryan Battaglia, Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who is the senior non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Armed Forces; PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem, whose father was in the Marines; and “CBS This Morning” Co-Host Norah O’Donnell, who grew up in South Korea and Germany while her father was deployed as an Army doctor.

Thanks to Barclays, thousands of local military members have been invited to enjoy complimentary admission to The Barclays all week, along with complimentary food and beverages in the Birdies for the Brave Patriots’ Outpost presented by Barclays, a military-exclusive hospitality chalet located on the 16th tee at The Ridgewood Country Club.
