CALLAWAY, BIRDIES FOR THE BRAVE TO HONOR HEROES THROUGHOUT 2017
CALLAWAY GOLF JOINS WITH BIRDIES FOR THE BRAVE® TO HONOR WOUNDED HEROES THROUGHOUT 2017 PGA TOUR SEASON
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (January 10, 2017) – Continuing its long-standing support for our military, Callaway Golf will join with Birdies for the Brave to host 15 Callaway Warrior Club Fittings during PGA TOUR tournaments in 2017. The first fitting of the season will take place on Tuesday, January 17, from 9:15 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. during the CareerBuilder Challenge on the TPC Stadium Course at PGA WEST in La Quinta, California, where two American heroes will have the opportunity to be fitted with their own custom set of Callaway Golf clubs. In addition, both veterans will enjoy a mini golf lesson and take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Callaway equipment truck, where they will learn about the process involved in fitting PGA TOUR players for clubs on-site during PGA TOUR tournaments.
Designed to aid in the rehabilitation process while expressing gratitude to the courageous members of our U.S. Armed Forces, the Callaway Warrior Club Fitting program has fit more than 100 warriors over the last five years and will fit another 30 warriors in 2017.
“Golf is an extraordinary way for wounded service members to heal from the physical and psychological wounds of war, as well as a great coping mechanism as they reintegrate into civilian life,” says Callaway Golf Director of Strategic Partnerships Randy Rubin. “We are honored to work in partnership with the PGA TOUR and Birdies for the Brave to express our sincere appreciation and give something back to those who do so much to keep America safe and free.”
Participating in the fitting will be Purple Heart recipient Sergeant First Class Joseph Masseur, who joined the Arizona National Guard in 1996 and deployed to Afghanistan in 2007. He subsequently volunteered for a second deployment to Afghanistan in 2009 as part of the Nevada National Guard. Just one month into his deployment, Masseur was on patrol when the vehicle in which he was a passenger rolled over an improvised explosive device (IED) – resulting in the amputation of his left leg below the knee as well as a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Masseur was medically retired from the Army in December 2011. Joining Masseur in the fitting will be U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Lisa Kukula. She was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 as an intelligence analyst working with the Special Forces, and sustained several injuries during the course of her duties – resulting in PTSD. Kukula volunteers as a veteran services officer with the VFW Post 9934 assisting other veterans, and credits golf with helping in her recovery.
In addition to the Callaway Warrior Club Fitting program, Birdies for the Brave includes a variety of military outreach and appreciation activities during more than 45 PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR Champions and Web.com Tour tournaments annually, as well as a series of fundraising events at TPCs and partner clubs across the U.S. The program was originally created in 2006 by TOUR player Phil Mickelson, whose father was a fighter jet pilot, and his wife, Amy. With Mickelson’s support, as well as that of 20 other TOUR players, corporate sponsors and TPC members, Birdies for the Brave has raised more than $17 million for non-profit military homefront groups that provide critical programs and services to meet the specialized needs of military families and wounded heroes.
